The English Day we had in Cambridge unit this January 21 was exceptionally fun said by most of my classmates and the student body. A few weeks before the event, I was chosen as one of the emcees. Obviously, I was overjoyed, but at the same time I was also super nervous, as I would be talking in front of the whole school.
Throughout the event, we played loads of fun games such as the JLKM game, spelling games, and even a debate! While all the games were exciting, my favorite one was definitely JKLM. It’s essentially a word bomb game, and it was really fun to watch! My friend Kelly, who was also an emcee, and I were making silly commentaries about the game to make it livelier and more stress-free. I don’t think it worked though, as some of the students were struggling to make words due to the pressure. Even my English teacher agreed that the atmosphere was super intense and competitive, as the bomb could go off at any given second. It was a little entertaining, to say the least.
Aside from JKLM, the spelling bee was also really entertaining! One of the PICs, Quinn, picked challenging words for the participants to spell. What made it even more amusing was the fact that she was smiling while they were struggling! Due to this game, I expanded my vocabulary, and it was undoubtedly a memorable experience. I bet the contestants think so too.
After the games, we all watched a very nice performance by Ashley and her friend Alina. I was amazed as I watched Alina sing so beautifully, while at the same time impressed at Ashley’s talent of being able to play several musical instruments. The teachers thought so too, and gave them both well-deserved compliments.
I really enjoyed this event, and I bet my peers would agree. Everyone did a great job with planning the event, and the teachers were very supportive too! I think it went really well, as I honed my public speaking skills and did not make any errors. In addition, the contestants learned to think under pressure, picked up new vocabulary, and even practiced their debating skills! English Day couldn’t have gone any better.
As our principal, Ms. Silvana, commented during her closing message and I quote, “ we have discovered fresh emceeing talents today, you can go a long way with your skills. Thank you for making our English Day 2022 celebration a memorable one. Keep it up!”
