If I were to ask you if straws were harmful for the environment, what would you say? Well, a fraction of people would say that yes, straws are indeed an environmental hazard, while a handful of people would say otherwise. This argument is brought up quite a lot, and you might
have trouble talking about this. Well, you’re in luck! This article will cover both sides of the coin.
People are often told that straws are terrible for the environment. They’re killing the ecosystem, they release harmful chemicals into our waters, and they take an absurd amount of time to decompose. Oftentimes, the endangered sea creatures even ingest those straws!
On the contrary, a minority of people say that straws aren’t even doing anything to the environment! That they’re just small pieces of plastic, and that most plastic in the sea comes from fishing gear anyways. Everything would be solved if people just stopped throwing straws in the ocean.
To sum everything up, while I do think that the latter had good points, I’m still convinced that straws are in fact an environmental hazard. Stopping all 7 billion people in the world from throwing straws is quite optimistic, and it would be more possible to just ban plastic straws from being produced.
As a student of SHB Cambridge, I will start it with me, not use plastic straws anymore! I am inviting all other Cambridge students to stop using plastic straws when we drink our soda, juice, soft drinks and even our iced-coffee and tea.
