Is my child ready for preschool? Will my child enjoy his/her first few weeks? Are his/her school supplies complete? Numerous questions might be lingering in our thoughts as most schools prepare to open their doors for preschoolers once again. It is definitely okay to experience mixed emotions such as excitement, nostalgia, anxiety or whatnot. Going back to school after years of home learning might be challenging for some and might be of pure joy for others.
Here are some tips I have read to make it fun for our children.
- Establish a routine. Kids do well with routines, so it might be beneficial to start practising with your child two weeks before the actual start of school to help them get accustomed to the schedule.
- Talk and read stories about going to school. It’s a great bonding time with your child to hear their thoughts, questions, and concerns. Stories outlining social events like going to school might be one of the ways to teach our kids about skills, and behaviours.
- Check out the classroom and meet the teachers. If possible, try to bring your child to school orientation or visit the school before the opening date. Children might feel at ease if they are familiar with the school setting and with their new teachers.
- Encourage and practice independent tasks. Guiding the children with some of the tasks that they might do at school (tidying up, washing hands, learning their full name, etc.) will boost their self-confidence before school starts.
- Handling emotions. Both parents and students deal with separation anxiety. Assuring our children and having clear communication helps them to manage feelings positively. A small familiar or cuddly toy might be helpful to soothe the child and feel more comfortable.
- Have Fun! Whether your child is going to school for the first time or going back after a long time, remember to keep calm, and try to have fun together. Parents know their children best.
