Have you ever felt unmotivated to do your work or even to do anything? And that’s when you actually decided to postpone what you are supposed to do. Well, that’s what you call procrastinating.
Most people struggle with their time management skills and force them to procrastinate. However, from what I read in an article on the NYTimes website, procrastination, for some people may not be due to their lack of skills in time management, however, it could be caused by their unstable emotions. For people like them, it may be a good way to cope with their negative moods. For instance, people with anxiety or insecurity might not be confident enough to do a task and they tend to overthink about it. And therefore, at the end, they decide to not do it.
I bet everyone has at least procrastinated once in their life. I want you to ask yourself, have you ever chosen to do something easier and delay other more important activities, or have you ever delayed to do something just to wait for the right mood to do so or even you find yourself hard to reach the due date of a task on time? If you answered yes to one of these, then I can say that you are procrastinating. And of course, this isn’t something to brag about. And why is that? Well, procrastination is bad. Think about it, the more you procrastinate, the less you have things done and more things will stack up in your to-do list. For example, in my case, I am a student, so if I procrastinate when I have a task, I will have less time to do it while more tasks are being assigned. This will force me to rush when doing it, which I think is less effective than doing it as soon as possible. Doing things in a rush can make me become more clumsy and cause the results to be not satisfying.
So now that we know why procrastination is bad, how do we actually remove the habit and start to do things more efficiently? Well the most important thing is our self-awareness. If we are actually aware of what we are doing, we can fix it. However, if we still haven’t realize our mistakes, then, these tips will actually become useless. Committing to do the tasks or activities is the first step after reflecting on yourself for doing procrastination. Once you commit, you should actually start being more productive than usual. Then, you should decide what actually motivates you. When you have found what motivates you the most, you should make that as a part of your reward for being productive. It’s similar to self-appreciation and self-reward. Well those are basic ways to fix your habit of procrastination. Nonetheless, the most important rule is to be consistent. If you don’t do it consistently, it can bring back the habit of procrastination again. I think that’s it from me, I wish you all procrastination fighters good luck. Thank you.
