Have you ever thought why there is a Valentine’s Day? Why do people celebrate it?
Long time ago, there was a king named Claudius. He was the king of ancient Rome. He wanted to have a big army at that time. However, most of the men in the country did not want to join in the army because they didn’t want to leave their wives and their children to go the war. This made King Claudius furious. He then made a rule that all marriages were banned and any men who wanted to get engaged was illegal.
There was a kind-hearted priest. His name was Valentine. He was not happy when he heard King Claudius’ new law of banning all marriages. Father Valentine was happy to marry couples. It was a great time when people come and ask him to marry them. For him, love was the best thing that could happen to people. He began performing marriages in secrecy. King Claudius finally found that Father Valentine was still performing marriages for couples. The King then ordered his guards to go and arrest Father Valentine and put him in the jail.
Many people came to visit Father Valentine in the jail. They threw flowers and wrote notes up to his window. They wanted him to know that they also believed in love. Then Father Valentine met the prison guard’s daughter who was blind. She used to bring his food and sometimes they sat and talked for hours. They felt in love and got married.
One day Valentine put his hands over his wife closed eyes. When she opened her eyes again, she could finally see! It was a miracle. The king was unhappy to hear it and he immediately ordered to get Father Valentine executed. His execution day was set on February 14th. On that day, Father Valentine wrote his final letter to the girl. He signed on his letter, …
“from your Valentine”
Lovers have sent each other messages on February the 14th with the sign of
ever since. This time people also send their messages and loves to parents, family, or friends they love on Valentine Day.
