As we all know, the word “Art” represents a way to express yourself, communicate with your ideas and feelings, and also to connect others with your creativity. But what exactly is Liberal art? “Liberal” from latin liberalis “free” and ars “art” takes the term of art in the sense of a learned skill rather than specifically the fine arts. It can refer to studies in a liberal arts degree or to a university education more generally. Such as the study of history, literature, philosophy, writing, sociology, creative arts and many more.
The basic purpose of a liberal arts is to liberate the human being to “exercise” their potential to the fullest. So why do I think it is worth it? It gives up good advantages to choose your major and minor subjects. Not only that, Liberal arts allow you to expand your creativity and critical thinking. Even the liberal arts degree prepares you for jobs that are yet to be created.
However, “Liberal Art” originally had 7 liberal arts. They were divided into two types which are “Trivium” and “Quadrivium”. Trivium includes ; Grammar, Logic and Rhetoric, and the Quadrivium includes ; Geometry, Arithmetic, Astronomy and Music. Now that we know that there were 7 liberal arts, what about the father of liberal arts?, “Who is the father of liberal arts?” The liberal arts were born when Aristotle divided knowledge into disciplines in ancient Greece. He viewed grammar, rhetoric and logic as important subjects in a liberal education, and that also relegated math, music, astronomy and geometry to secondary status. Why? It is because of their theoretical nature.
In conclusion, Liberal Arts gives you good benefits like; a chance to explore the human experience, An opportunity to pursue a variety of career options, The skills to hone critical thinking, Gain a multidisciplinary perspective, and to learn on how to think differently.
