Starting from 8 to 15 February 2023, students from grade one to six of Sekolah Dasar Harapan Bangsa were assigned a project in order to celebrate the English Day. The peak day of this annual event fell on Thursday, 16 February 2023 in which all students joined an online assembly. The event was opened by having students read the Sekolah Harapan Bangsa (SHB) pledge, sing the national anthem, Indonesia Raya, and SHB march.
The primary principal, Ms Theodora Rudyanto, S.Psi., M.Psi. led students in the reading of Pancasila. Before listening to an inspirational speech about tolerance delivered by Ms Melda Simanjuntak, S.S., M.Hum., the English teachers briefly informed about the project held in each class, followed by giving an opportunity for several students to give a short presentation on the project they did in the class. The whole process and the students’ work were then shown in a five-minute video.
The 2023 English Day essentially aimed at improving students’ English skills, namely, listening, speaking, reading and writing. In addition, it is expected that students can also enhance their 21st century skills, most specifically, creativity, communication and problem solving. Despite the fact that students had only limited time to accomplish the work, most of them responded to it excitedly and were able to collaborate well with their teammates.
