Being able to communicate in multiple languages opens up a world of opportunities. At Sekolah Harapan Bangsa, especially in our Cambridge Centre, English and Mandarin are the main languages we learn. These languages are among the most widely spoken worldwide, and learning more about them can help us connect and communicate with people from diverse cultures.
In Sekolah Harapan Bangsa, the “Interclass Competition” is organized for both languages to test students' writing, speaking, reading, and listening abilities from CS1 to JC2.
During the English interclass competition, we improve in various language skills, including speaking on given topics, listening to music and filling in the blanks (not always), reading passages and answering questions, and writing letters to imaginary friends. For Mandarin, we only do three skills, excluding writing. For CS1 students, the HSK 3 book is used for the interclass competition.
This competition occurs every term, with different language skills being tested each term. In the 2023-2024 academic year, reading was tested in term 1, listening in term 2, writing in term 3, and speaking in term 4. Winners are announced within the class as students compete against their classmates.
Participating in these competitions can be challenging, as the topics are not revealed beforehand. This requires students to rely on their creativity and language skills, especially for writing in English and for those who are still mastering Mandarin. However, winning is not the main focus; what truly matters is every student's effort, hard work, and participation.
At Sekolah Harapan Bangsa, the main focus is not only on achieving top honours but also on recognizing the dedication and effort of each student. While these words may be expected in many schools, they remind students to strive for excellence while valuing the learning journey.
Participating in the interclass competition has been an enriching experience as a CS1 student. It has challenged me to improve my language skills and allowed me to appreciate the importance of effective communication in today's interconnected world.
