The holiday known as Chinese New Year marks the start of a fresh year according to the ancient lunisolar Chinese calendar. The holiday is frequently referred to as the “Spring Festival” in Chinese. On January 30, 2023, Sekolah Harapan Bangsa Cambridge held our unit celebration for this occasion. Everyone wore red attire and cheongsams filled the Cambridge foyer, which was packed with lively and enthusiastic students.
We split up into our different house teams for the lantern-making competition after our morning assembly in the lobby. Each team had to decorate ten Chinese lanterns, which they then had to display. We all put a lot of effort into this event and were able to compete effectively, and as a result, each house team produced a number of wonderful and exceptional lanterns.
Ms. Silvana Hermosa, our beloved principal, then gave an inspirational message. Mrs. Indra T. Honoris, deputy chairperson of Yayasan Pendidikan Harapan Bangsa Indonesia also joined us and gave us her greetings in Mandarin Chinese and was translated in English by Mr. Purnawan Sutiono, assistant to the deputy chairperson. Following that, we proceeded on to the performances that each class had planned. JC1 was the first to take the stage with their sword dance. They were really fantastic in their fierce movement with their sticks to mimic a traditional Chinese sword dance. The next performance was “The Tale of the Year,” a play featuring ribbon dancing by CS3 students. We told the story of Nian, the monster, and how the villagers and ribbon dancers scared him away. The CS2 soap opera followed, in which they portrayed an ancient Chinese performance with a lot of drama, and it really captivated the audience. We also saw CS1’s puppet presentation about the zodiac signs, JC2’s fan dance, CS4’s dance along with Kung Fu, and last but not least, the teacher’s performance.
On behalf of the SHB Cambridge family, thank you all for celebrating with us. We wish you a happy new year of 2023, good luck, and all the best!
