Chinese New Year Celebration 2022

Chinese New Year, also called Lunar New Year, is an important celebration for East and Southeast Asian cultures. As a part of the Chinese New Year celebration, Sekolah Harapan Bangsa organized an event for students to enjoy. Traditionally, the event would include origami lantern making, performances by students from kindergarten to high school, Barongsai performances, and giving out angpao to students.

Ever since the Coronavirus pandemic started, students had to unfortunately carry out their activities at home, which includes learning activities. This means that events such as Chinese New Year have to be done online using video conferencing. Nevertheless, the event went on with full festivities and joy.

This year, Sekolah Harapan Bangsa held a Chinese New Year event on February 10, 2022 with Laoshi Daud, the school’s mandarin teacher, as the person in charge. The event started with a speech from the board members, head of school, and Senior High principal. The event continued and students were given a video to watch about how Chinese people, Singaporean and Indonesian celebrate Chinese New Year. The students then proceeded to watch a video of a dragon dance performance, which was a cutout controlled by people.

All Sekolah Harapan Bangsa students were given a task to make a tiger envelope and a paper cutting of the hanzi “Fu”. They were then instructed to record a video of them saying new year wishes with it, which were later shown at the Chinese New Year event. To entertain the students, Laoshi Daud worked with the student council to hold a zodiac-themed Quizizz game and another one about guessing teachers. In both Quizizz games, five winners were chosen from junior and senior high, and each winner was awarded angpao as a prize.

Afterwards, students from each class all gave each other and the teachers Chinese New Year wishes. A prayer concluded the event before the students were dismissed.
