SD Harapan Bangsa has always accorded Kartini special consideration, which is in line with its vision and mission. Even when the pandemic compelled schools to rigorously organize their activity schedules, Kartini Day was kept as one of the programs. This decision may have been influenced by Kartini's concern and commitment to advancing Indonesian education. If we are more attentive when reading her letters, we can also see two other visions of SHB in Kartini's personality: one who shrewdly questioned the religious and cultural rules that held her back, and the other who steadfastly attempted to make a real contribution to the world of education despite all the social obstacles she faced.
This year's Kartini Day celebration was held online on Friday 22 April 2022. Students and teachers congregated at two different links. The event began with a prayer, which was followed by a brief video biography of Kartini and her patriotic songs. Small classes happily engaged in the Jeopardy game about Kartini as the main activity. Several student representatives in the upper classes read three of Kartini's letters. Through their comments and questions following the reading of the letters, it is evident that the students have a deeper understanding of Kartini's turmoil and struggle to confront the social challenges in her society.
Due to the epidemic, it is acknowledged that this year's Kartini celebration would be held under restricted circumstances. Hopefully, this will not dampen our desire to follow in Kartini's footsteps and make a significant contribution to the advancement of our country, particularly in the sphere of education. Quoting Kartini's own words: “People can take a lot from us, certainly, from all of us, but not my pen. It remains mine, and I shall practice rigorously with it.”
