Why Is Language Development So Important for Young Kids?

We are all aware that kids have the ability to learn very quickly at a young age. Their minds are like sponges, just looking for information to absorb. As human beings, we never stop learning, but so much of that learning actually takes place within the first five years or so. The importance of language development in early childhood cannot be understated. In this article, we’ll be taking a look at some of the key reasons why.

Children Learn How To Effectively Communicate

What is the importance of language development in young kids? We’ve already established that children more readily learn new things at an early age, so the more exposure they have to actively learn English in every way possible, the better they’ll become at communicating both verbally and in written form.

Communication is a skill that not only requires an excellent understanding of language, but also the self-confidence that comes with that understanding. The more young kids understand how to communicate, the more their self-esteem and confidence will be boosted. There is also less chance they’ll be shy speaking in front of a group as they get older.

The Expression and Comprehension of Feelings

Being able to express feelings and also being able to understand when someone else is trying to express how they feel about something also goes hand in hand with positive language development. While we don’t only express feelings and thoughts verbally, much of it comes through in what we say.

Children will learn, at an early age, how to clearly express how they are feeling and develop empathy and understanding for the expressions of others. Much of it is about having a firm grasp of language, along with a rudimentary understanding of body language cues.

This point actually ties in with the ability to communicate effectively, as expressing and understanding feelings is an integral part of good communication.

Good Language Skills Enhances the Ability To Learn

Reading is one of the most vital skills learned when comprehending language and it is the ability to read well and develop a love for the written word that can eventually lead to so much learning at a young age and right throughout a person’s life.

A glut of knowledge comes from books or reading content online, so much so that most wealthy people always claim they read a lot and are always learning through reading.

One of the most important and greatest skills a young child can learn is to read and read well. Cultivating a love for reading is just as important, for if a child can read but doesn’t enjoy reading, chances are they’re not going to read very much.

At an early age, children should be encouraged to read content that appeals to them and that they get the most enjoyment out of. This will transpire into a love for reading that will spread out into other subject matter as they grow older.

Learning a Foreign Language

People have the ability to learn a foreign language at any time in life, but it’s so much easier for young children to learn both English and a language from another country. If you want your child to learn a foreign language or they express an interest in doing so, the best time to start is when they are really young.

Learning a foreign language at a young age also serves to enhance a child’s ability with languages overall. They’ll develop confidence with learning English, the language of another culture and this will often lead to a desire to learn more languages in the future. Being fluent in more than one language can lead to unique job and career opportunities later in life.
