The Waisak Celebration at Harapan Bangsa Modernhill Junior and Senior High School was held on Tuesday, May 28, 2024. This event commemorated three significant events: the birth of Prince Siddhartha, the enlightenment of the ascetic Gotama as the Buddha, and the Buddha's Parinibbana. All students and teachers attended, providing a perfect opportunity to respect and honor our differences.
The celebration featured various activities, including Pindapata, the recitation of the Dhammapada scripture, a speech by the principal, a sermon by Bhikkhu Abhipunno, the Tri Ratna Blessing dance, a performance by the religion teachers, and the Fangsheng activity. Bhikkhu Abhipunno discussed the importance of respecting diversity among friends and the benefits of practicing tolerance towards others. Attendees also learned about the Ehipassiko Foundation and collectively performed good deeds by making donations for the Interfaith Social Service Program.
Mrs. Sisilia Juni, the vice principal, delivered a welcoming speech and extended Waisak greetings to the Buddhist teachers, staff, and students. She reminded everyone to practice tolerance towards friends of different religions, ethnicities, and cultures.
Bhikkhu Abhipunno spoke on diversity, emphasizing how it makes life colorful. He explained how to maintain a positive attitude towards friends of different religions, especially at school, and elaborated on the benefits of practicing kindness towards everyone.
Next, Mr. Andre presented an explanation about the Ehipassiko Foundation, focusing on the paramita donation program. This was followed by a symbolic donation handover by Mr. Joko. Teachers encouraged students to lead meaningful lives by helping others.
After the activities concluded, Buddhist students offered lunch dana to the Bhikkhu and received blessings. They then participated in a Faith Journey to Boen Tek Bio in Tangerang's Pasar Lama, where they listened to explanations from a tour guide and performed pujabakti at Boen Tek Bio.
Overall, the Waisak 2558 BE / 2024 activities went smoothly, with all students, teachers, and staff being very cooperative and enthusiastic participants.
