It’s the 81st anniversary of our country’s Independence Day. I would like to take this opportunity to talk about one national hero, Daan Mogot, a young Indonesian freedom fighter who played an important role in Indonesia’s struggle for independence. Born on December 28, 1928, in Manado, Daan Mogot showed remarkable leadership and courage from a very young age. When Indonesia proclaimed its independence in 1945, he was only 16 years old, yet he chose to take part in the struggle and joined the resistance against the Dutch forces. He later became one of the founders and instructors of the Tangerang Military Academy, where young soldiers were trained and prepared to defend the newly independent nation.
Daan Mogot was chosen because of his bravery, dedication, and willingness to serve his country at such a young age. While most teenagers would have been focused on school, friends, and their everyday lives, Daan Mogot dedicated himself to something much greater: the struggle for Indonesia’s freedom. His story reminds us that courage is not determined by age, but by the choices we make and the values we are willing to stand for.
Today, Daan Mogot’s legacy continues to be remembered through schools, streets, and military institutions that bear his name. More importantly, his story continues to inspire younger generations to value courage, discipline, responsibility, and love for the homeland. His life is a powerful reminder that even at a young age, a person can make a meaningful contribution to their country and leave a lasting impact on history.
