On September 21, 2021 (Lunar Calendar: 8th day of the 15th month), Junior-Senior High Sekolah Harapan Bangsa Modernhill held one of the traditional Chinese Festival events, namely the Mid-Autumn Festival. This event was celebrated virtually via Google Meet. The Mid-Autumn Festival event aimed to make students understand more deeply, and have an interest in learning and exploring Chinese culture on the day of the festival.
The event began with watching a series of videos about: “Why do we commemorate the Mid-Autumn Festival”, “Why do we eat moon cakes and not other cakes?”, “Why do we do moon prayers/offerings on that day?”. After that, Laoshi Calvin, as the PIC, gave a brief presentation on the history of eating mooncakes, the types of mooncakes on the market, the types of offerings at the moon prayer, and why the offerings contained pomelos, sweet potatoes, and water chestnuts. Through the video and short presentation above, students once again deepen their understanding of the moon cake festival.
Next, a Quizziz competition was held about the Mid-Autumn Festival. The winners of the Quizziz competition, from 1st to 3rd place, received an E-Certificate and 2 “homework-free” vouchers. Those who get a “homework free” voucher could contact the Mandarin teacher to exchange the voucher, so students were entitled to get homework free and get full marks. Therefore, the students were very enthusiastic participating in the Quizziz competition. The competition was also very tight. The purpose of the competition is to build students' self-confidence and also to cultivate students' interest in Chinese culture.
Finally, representatives from the Student Council of Senior High Sekolah Harapan Bangsa Modernhill, Clara the student council president and Zefanya the vice chairman of the student council, prepared a picture guessing game. All students could follow and type the answers in the space provided, and the OSIS documentation team screenshot one of the students who answered correctly. The winner, again, got 1 “homework-free” voucher. The picture guessing game was very cool. After the guessing game was over, Josephine from Grade 10, sang a song called “Yue Ya Wan”. As together, Josephine's voice is so beautiful!
Although the 2021 Mid-Autumn Festival event was held online, it didn’t hinder the students and all participants to gain a lot of knowledge about the Mid-Autumn Festival. Other than that, students could collaborate with other friends, while learning and understanding Chinese culture which actually represents the meaning of commemorating the Mid-Autumn Festival, “the day for gathering”. Happy celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival 2021! Don't forget to eat moon cake!
