On Tuesday, the 21st of September 2021, the junior and senior high school students of Sekolah Harapan Bangsa celebrated the Mid-Autumn-themed “Mandarin Day”. The event started 09.30 a.m.. Due to the pandemic, this year the event was celebrated virtually.
In this event, the students watched several Mid-Autumn-themed videos. The first video they watched was a tutorial video on how to make paper lanterns in the shape of rabbits. The students created their own rabbit-shaped paper lanterns afterwards. After that, they watched a special video recommended by Mrs. Indra T. Honoris, Deputy Chairman of Sekolah Harapan Bangsa. This video is about a traditional story about how the goddess Chang Er flew to the moon. It also showed how the dancers used their own shadows behind the curtains to make shapes that represent the traditional Chinese cultures such as rabbits, mooncakes and the Great Wall of China. The students were really excited to see all the beauty in the video. Another video they watched was a movie called “Art Blossoms in the East” presented by Oriental Song and Dance Ensemble, telling about special connection the Chinese people had with the moon. The moon represents reunion and longing for the hometown.
After the three videos, the students enjoyed more clips showing poetry recital, calligraphy writing, Mid-Autumn tales and paintings and the making of mooncakes and lanterns. Even though the event was celebrated virtually, the students showed very high enthusiasm.
