Modernhill, June 3, 2026 – A warm atmosphere and a spirit of togetherness filled the Sekolah Harapan Bangsa (Junior and Senior High School) campus in Modernhill on Wednesday, June 3, 2026. Resounding cheers, hearty laughter, and enthusiastic shouts broke the morning silence as 199 students from Grades 7–12 gathered for the school's annual Buddy Program.
In line with the school’s vision, “Knowledge, Faith, and Character: The Ultimate Goals of Education,” this annual event serves as more than just a calendar activity. It acts as a bridge connecting senior high school students as mentors and junior high school students as mentees, fostering meaningful relationships across grade levels.
From Icebreakers to Building Strong Teams
The event, which ran from 7:10 a.m. to 12:10 p.m., began with an energetic team-building session on the basketball court. Led by teachers and student coordinators, all students were encouraged to participate fully in the activities to ensure an engaging and inclusive bonding experience.
Students got to know one another and broke the ice through a series of collaborative games, including Group Mission & Know Your Team, Group Chants, Chain Messages, Charades, and Spider Web. This morning session successfully built trust and helped break down barriers between senior and junior students.
The Highlight: Interest-Based Parallel Competitions
Once team cohesion had been established, the event moved on to its most anticipated segment at 9:30 a.m.: the Parallel Competitions.
One of the unique features of this year’s Buddy Program was the freedom for each group to choose activities that aligned with their interests and talents. The competitions were held simultaneously in different locations:
This parallel format proved highly effective in accommodating the diverse interests of students. From athletes and gamers to young artists, every participant was given an opportunity to shine.
More Than Just a Competition: An Investment in Character
The Buddy Program at Sekolah Harapan Bangsa is a tangible investment in character development. For junior high school students, the presence of supportive senior students provides a sense of security, reduces anxiety about navigating a larger school environment, and offers positive role models.
Meanwhile, for senior high school students, the program serves as a practical platform for developing essential soft skills such as leadership, communication, empathy, and conflict resolution. The experience of mentoring younger students also adds significant value to their portfolios and helps prepare them for future academic and professional challenges.
This aligns with the desired Learners’ Outcomes:
“Younger students feel safe and cared for, while older students feel valued and respected. This enjoyable activity fosters a sense of connectedness that allows both groups to form stronger bonds with their school.”
The success of this event was made possible through the hard work of a dedicated organizing committee and the full support of the school principals, Mr. A. Joko Purwanto and Mrs. Sisilia Juni Arianti, ensuring that every activity ran smoothly, orderly, and joyfully.
Conclusion
The 2026 Buddy Program demonstrated that education at Sekolah Harapan Bangsa Modernhill focuses not only on academic achievement inside the classroom but also on character development and healthy social relationships beyond it.
Through this program, the school remains committed to providing a learning environment that nurtures students’ talents and interests while fostering a generation that is not only academically capable but also caring, inclusive, and supportive of one another.
The 2026 Buddy Program successfully demonstrated that some of the most meaningful character education takes place not in the classroom, but through laughter, teamwork, and mutual support among students.
