CAREER OPTIONS IN THE DIGITAL ERA

Career competition in the digital era, especially for the z generation, requires students to behave proactively and to compete in determining future life and career goals which are in accordance with students' abilities and skills. Determination and career development require a lot of effort. According to Wikipedia, generation z members have been using digital technology since a young age and are comfortable with the Internet and social media, but do not have to be digitally literate (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generation_Z).

This means that adolescents will be more likely to use various kinds of digital media ranging from social media, games and the Internet as a learning process and a form of self-expression. Therefore, the school, as a place of learning, comes with works and various special programmes to support the future of students so that students can channel their various talents and abilities according to the demands of the times.

To accommodate the students’ need, Harapan Bangsa Modernhill School organises a yearly programme called “Career Day”. The purpose of this activity is to introduce future career choices to students, which suit their talents and interests. By following the current trends, on 10^th December 2019, the school invited a young man who is a Youtuber as well as a successful entrepreneur, named Dwi Hartono.

Dwi Hartono was born on 6^th October 1985 in Lahat. He graduated from faculty of medicine and holds the title as a doctor. However, he chose to transform himself as a businessman as well as a YouTuber.

On the Career Day event, Dwi Hartono shared his experiences in achieving success to become an entrepreneur. He went through ups and downs until he went bankrupt by having billions of rupiah in debt. However, he was able to get back on his feet that now, he holds the title as the CEO of PT. EGD, the CEO of PT. HMM, and the CEO of Hartono Group.

Dwi Hartono emphasized the need for an active business and the willingness to never give up in running a business to students, even when they face a lot of failure while running it. “Have a big dream. Acknowledge the ideas you have in mind. Don't just have an idea but do not dare to execute it.”

In addition to being a businessman, Dwi Hartono also pursued a career as a Youtuber. According to him, being a YouTuber is not easy but also not difficult. To be a successful YouTuber, one must have an interesting idea to pick a theme or title, including the content, that brings out people’s curiosity.

Besides inviting Dwi Hartono, the school also invited a speaker from UMN, whose topic for the speech is  “Career Choices in the Digital Era”. The speaker emphasized career choices that fit the abilities of students in the current digital era. How to choose the right and appropriate career based on the trend of the times but professional and successful in their fields.

Overall, students were very enthusiastic and happy with this Career Day event. This event is expected to provide many positive benefits so students have an overview of career choices which are in accordance with their hopes.
