Success in learning depends on the level of one's motivation when learning. Motivation is what drives children to achieve their learning goals. So, it can be concluded that children's motivation is the single most important element in learning activities (Filgona et al, 2020). Gredler, Broussard and Garrison (in Filgona et al, 2020) define motivation as an attribute that influences us to do or not do something.
Motivation can be classified into two types, namely:
1. Intrinsic motivation which is an internal force that encourages children to be involved in academic activities because they feel interested and enjoy the learning process. (Schiefele in Chow & Yong (in Filgona et al, 2020)
2. Extrinsic motivation comes from all kinds of stimulus that is affected by the outside environment of a child in the learning process. (Filgona et al, 2020)
British educator Charlotte Mason mentioned in a quote “when we sow habits, we reap character. But if we step back a little, we will find that we have to sow the ideas that are the beginning of a habit.”
Ideas are very powerful motivators. When a single idea takes root in our children's minds, it can grow many times over. But as parents we never know when an idea will stick, implant and evolve. However, parents should not miss the opportunity to sow good ideas into the hearts of our children so as to encourage them to have good habits. These ideas can come from what they read, hear, and feel every day.
