On June 9, 2025, a health seminar was held for students of Harapan Bangsa Modernhill Junior High School and Senior High School. This seminar carried the theme “Raising Adolescent Awareness of Reproductive Health: Building a Healthier Future.” The seminar was presented by Dr. Hans Christian, SpKJ, a psychiatrist known for actively educating teenagers about the importance of mental and reproductive health.
In his presentation, Dr. Hans emphasized that reproductive health is not only related to physical aspects but also involves mental and social well-being.
“Reproductive health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being in relation to the human reproductive system, its functions, and processes,” he explained.
The seminar discussed in depth the topic of puberty — a crucial phase in adolescent life marking the transition from childhood to adulthood. This phase typically begins at ages 8–13 for girls and 9–14 for boys, accompanied by various changes such as:
Physical: Growth in height, the appearance of hair in certain body areas, menstruation in girls, and nocturnal emissions in boys.
Hormonal: Increase in estrogen (girls) and testosterone (boys).
Emotional: Feeling more sensitive, developing interest in the opposite sex, and searching for self-identity.
“Adolescents must understand that these changes are normal and a natural part of personal development. However, it is also important not to view oneself solely from a personal perspective but also from the perspectives of parents, environment, and spiritual values,” said Dr. Hans.
During the interactive and open session, he also reminded the importance of vigilance against sexual abuse. He emphasized that abuse can occur in various forms — verbal, physical, non-verbal, and visual.
“If you feel uncomfortable or see signs of abuse, do not hesitate to report it to your parents or teachers. You have rights and legal protection,” he stressed.
This sensitive yet important topic was discussed frankly but wisely. Dr. Hans explained that sexual activity is essentially intended for procreation, which is to have offspring.
“Sex is not just a sign of love, nor is it to appear cool or follow trends. Sexual behavior before the appropriate time can carry great risks, such as teenage pregnancy, transmission of diseases, and psychological impacts,” he explained.
Closing the seminar, Dr. Hans gave a profound message that was met with applause from the students:
“Be a person who is not easily provoked by anything or anyone. Because it is better not to try at all than to regret trying.”
At the end of the seminar session, Mrs. Sisilia Juni Arianti, S.Pd.M.Pd the Head of Junior High School, also emphasized the importance of this education. The advice from parents or teachers should not be considered old-fashioned or outdated but rather as a form of reminder so that students are not easily provoked or fall into temptation.
“Remember that puberty is a normal stage of growth, and it is important for us to maintain physical and mental health during this time. Do not hesitate to ask questions and seek support from parents, teachers, or health professionals if anything is confusing. Hopefully, all the children can get through this healthily and enthusiastically.”
This seminar was not only an educational space but also a reflection for students to better understand their bodies and responsibilities as adolescents.
It is hoped that with the right knowledge, the younger generation will be able to build a healthier, smarter, and wiser future in facing life’s challenges.
