Incorporating Global Citizenship Education in English class: A cultural exchange program between Harapan Bangsa Primary School, Modernhill and Youngpung Elementary School, Seoul – South Korea

As part of its commitment to promoting global understanding and communication, Harapan Bangsa Primary School Modernhill partnered with Youngpung Elementary School in Seoul, South Korea, for a meaningful cultural exchange program. This initiative was designed to help students apply their English productive skills—particularly speaking and writing—while also broadening their perspectives and building connections with peers from a different cultural background.

The first activity took place in October 2024, when Grade 6A students from Harapan Bangsa participated in a live video conference with their Korean counterparts during an English session. 

The students eagerly shared presentations about their school life and culture, helping to sharpen their speaking and presentation abilities. As a highlight of the session, some Harapan Bangsa students performed the traditional Papuan dance “Sajojo,” while the Korean students gave a live performance of daegeum, a traditional bamboo flute piece. 

The second phase of the program, scheduled for December 2024, included a letter and gift exchange. Through this activity, students refined their writing with the help of their teacher and engaged in a personal exchange that offers a deeper understanding of Korean traditions.

The program has been met with great enthusiasm. Beside improving their English skills, students have also gained valuable insights into another culture and experienced the joy of international friendship and collaboration.
