Christmas Around the World

[:en]Christmas is celebrated in many countries , but that doesn’t mean it is celebrated in the same manner.

In Australia , where I come from , Christmas is celebrated very traditionally and quite calmly. Generally families go to church in the morning , go home to open presents ( mostly for the kids ) , then lunch at home with extended family.

Being Summer , and being very hot , often a bbq lunch is the preferred style with the leftovers being eaten for dinner.

However , in other parts of the world there are some strange ways to celebrate.

Thanks to a 1974 advertising campaign , many families in Japan eat KFC on Christmas Eve.

In Norway , cleaning is not allowed on Christmas Eve so all brooms are hidden away in case they are stolen by witches or evil spirits.

The preferred way to travel to Mass in Venezuela is by rollerskates.

On December 5th in Germany , a shoe is left outside on the doorstep overnight. Most shoes are filled with candy by the morning , but if you have been naughty you might find a tree branch instead.

If you don’t receive new clothes before Christmas Eve in Iceland , beware ! The mythical Yule Cat will devour you !

Children in Italy do not wait for Santa to arrive. They look forward to the arrival of Befana the friendly witch who delivers candy and toys on the 5th of January.

If you would like to send a letter to Santa Claus , the address is : Santa Claus , North Pole , Canada. All letters sent to this address will be replied to.

So where would you like to spend your Christmas this year ??[:zh]Christmas is celebrated in many countries , but that doesn’t mean it is celebrated in the same manner.
