Eid – The Celebration of Unity and Gratitude

Eid, also known as Idul Fitri or Hari Raya, is a significant religious festival celebrated by Muslims worldwide, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan. It's a time of joy and celebration, and people usually spend it with family and friends. Although customs and traditions may differ depending on culture and location, there are common activities that most people participate in during this holiday. This article will explore the typical ways people celebrate Eid.

1.            Go to Mosque for Eid Prayer: One of the most important activities during Eid is attending the Eid prayer, which is held in mosques or designated public spaces. People gather early in the morning, dressed in their traditional attire, to perform the Eid prayer, which consists of two rakats and a sermon delivered by the imam.

2.            Visit Graves of Ancestors: It is common for us to visit the graves of our ancestors during Eid. Several families will tidy and embellish the burial sites, recite prayers, and distribute food to those in need.

3.            Ask for Forgiveness: We typically seek forgiveness from our family members, friends, and colleagues during Eid. This is an important part of the celebration. This occasion provides an opportunity for individuals to move forward and let go of past conflicts by practicing forgiveness.

4.            Wear New Clothes: Wearing new clothes is a significant part of Eid celebrations. Many people buy new traditional clothing or modern outfits for themselves and their family members. The colorful and ornate clothing adds to the festive atmosphere of Eid.

5.            Prepare Special Food: The Eid feast is another significant activity during the festival. Families gather together to prepare special dishes, sweets, and drinks. Traditional Indonesian dishes like rendang, opor ayam, and ketupat are often prepared, and we indulge in the delicious food while spending time with our loved ones.

6.            Exchange Gifts: The exchange of gifts is another important activity during Eid. We often buy new clothes, jewelry, and other items to give to our family and friends. Children and teenagers receive money or gifts from their elders, which they often use to buy toys and treats.

7.            Visit Relatives and Friends: Eid is also a time to visit relatives and friends and spend time with them. We often travel to their hometowns or visit our loved ones in other parts of the country. Visiting friends and relatives is a way to strengthen relationships and share the joy of the festival.

8.            Give to Charity: Giving to charity is another significant activity during Eid. Many Muslims choose to donate to charity during this time, and people often give money, food, and clothes to those who are less fortunate. Giving to charity is a way to fulfill the teachings of Islam and show compassion and generosity to others.

In general, Eid is a time of happiness, festivity, and social connection for muslims around the world. The traditional activities help foster unity, reconciliation, and kindness throughout the celebration.
