Step Towards Reading and Writing: CVC Words

Do you know what teachers mean when they say children can blend and segment CVC words?

CVC words are simple words made up of a consonant, vowel, consonant eg: c-a-t, d-o-g.

Children need to be able to orally blend and segment before they start to read and write words, this simply means that they can hear and say the sounds in words.

To make learning FUN there are lots of games you can play to encourage these skills.

1. Play CVC I spy. Place CVC picture cards on the table, then take turns to say “I spy with my little eye something with the sounds c-a-t” Whoever identifies the object wins the card.

2. Incorporate Robot games by speaking like a robot into everyday activities: “Put on your h-a-t. Put on your c-oa-t. Put on your b-oo-ts”

3. Segmenting word songs sung to the tune of ‘Here we go round the Mulberry bush.’ Choose a CVC picture card from a pile and sing. ‘This is the way we make the word cat, make the word cat, make the word cat. This is the way we make the word cat, ……… C A T!’

4. Play the Tom and Pom board game orally segmenting each word as a player lands on the picture.

Always Remember:

• It is important that you progress at the rate set by your child
• Little and often at these early stages is always best
• Involve the whole family
• Any reluctance may indicate that a child is not developmentally ready for a stage and so wait until they are ready
• Make activities fun by incorporating the learning into games, treasure hunts, sound walks etc
