Tantrum are not the time to:
Use logic and explanation
Expect your child to answer question
Try to reason or negotiate
Use shame or punishment to make it stop
Ignore your child.
Toddlers have a tantrum when they are overwhelmed with big feelings and emotions and can no longer control their emotions.
Every tantrum is an opportunity to help your toddler go from dysregulated emotions and behavior to being regulated. This becomes the building blocks of a toddler's learning self control.
Tantrums are the time to:
Make sure your child is physically safe
Hold space for and soothe their emotions
Focus on keeping yourself calm and grounded
Stay with your toddler or nearby
Upholds limit you set
Tantrums are an emotional release. Your toddler needs to release their emotions in an emotionally safe place to be able to come back to their emotional equilibrium.
