Bias

In every school, a pervasive issue lurks beneath the surface: bias. While some overlook it, others protest, and many accept it. What is bias? It is a tendency to treat one thing or person more or less favorably than another, often unfairly, which is common in schools today. Bias obviously negatively impacts schools; it affects not just one side but can influence both.

Bias often rears its head in school competitions, particularly when judges are involved, leading to unfair outcomes. Imagine if, in all of the competitions, that particular side won, how horrible and heartbreaking it would be for students who worked hard? How disappointed would it be for students who went the extra mile to have a glimmer of hope that maybe they would win?

For example, imagine a class competition, and to compare, sure, side (A) is good, but what if side (B) is the best? Surely the logical thinking would be for B to win, but just because of the bias, A would win, and B would… have to accept. But not all would accept, most of them would’ve fought for themselves since they worked with blood, sweat, and tears — yet A just won… easily. But the reality is, no matter how hard they protest, at least one of the judges would find a reason why A should win, though it’s unreasonable. This could potentially enrage B more than A always won, no matter how good they are. This could make them spread rumors, bullying, and larger problems —imagine just because of bias, this all could happen? This would make A not do it anymore because of the bullying. B would also be disappointed, mad, and sad, and since no one would listen, what can they do except that? Naturally, B  wouldn't back off, and this chaos could erupt into a larger problem that next time A wins, A wouldn’t be proud or happy again, would they? So, bias wouldn’t help A — instead, it would affect negatively on A and B. Also, doesn’t every school want to stop bullying? Then stop with all the bias — this could lead to one another, being one of the chances of bullying verbally, cyber, or even physical.

Basically, I think schools should stop with bias. This would affect and even make the school fall into chaos. Bias is a small action, but that small action can cause larger problems for all. How horrible and heartbreaking it would be for students who worked hard!

Consider a class competition where side A is good, but side B is objectively better. Despite this, bias might lead to A's victory. Surely, the logical thinking would be for B to win, but just because of the bias, A would win, and B would have to accept. But some would refuse to accept, most of them would’ve fought for themselves since they worked with blood, sweat, and tears — yet A just won… easily. However, the reality is that no matter how hard they protest, at least one of the judges will find an unreasonable reason for A to win. This could potentially enrage B more, as they would feel that A always wins, no matter how good they are. This bias can lead to rumors, bullying, and larger issues, illustrating how a seemingly small act can escalate into significant problems. This would make A not want to participate anymore due to the bullying. B would also be disappointed, angry, and sad, and since no one would listen, what can they do except give up? Naturally, B would not back down, and this chaos could escalate into a larger problem, where next time A wins, A would not be proud or happy again. So, bias would not help A – instead, it would affect them negatively, as well as B. Also, doesn't every school want to stop bullying? Then, they should stop with all the bias – this could lead to one another, being one of the chances of bullying being verbal, cyber, or even physical.Ultimately, schools must address and eliminate bias to prevent chaos and ensure a fair environment for all students. Bias is a small action, but that small action can make larger problems for everyone.
