Candi Gedong Songo, located in Central Java, Indonesia, is a breathtaking group of ancient Hindu temples nestled at the foot of Mount Ungaran. The site offers not only a glimpse of these historic temples but also a stunning journey through lush green forests and deep cliffs shrouded in thick mist.

The journey to Candi Gedong Songo is no easy task. We first traveled along the winding, mountainous roads of Ambarawa to reach the shuttle point. From there, the shuttle carried us up even steeper, twisting paths as the mist thickened with every turn. Finally, we arrived at the entrance gate, where a steep stone path led us up to the temples. The weathered stones underfoot served as ancient steps, guiding us onward.

The stone path was steep and slippery, covered with damp moss. Each step echoed softly in the fog, the crunch of gravel underfoot blending with the distant chirping of birds. On clear days, we could see the distant peaks of Mount Telomoyo, Mount Merbabu, and even Mount Sumbing piercing through the clouds.

The name “Gedong Songo” means “Nine Buildings,” referring to the nine temples constructed from volcanic rock, their surfaces adorned with carvings depicting the old gods and mythological heroes. A thick fog clings to the moist surfaces, wrapping around the temples like a shroud. The air is biting cold, sending chills that slowly seep into your bones. As the cold deepens, an eerie sensation arises. It feels as though the fog is alive, watching over the ancient temples.
