Maret 2, 2018[:en]Social media plays an important role in our daily lives. According to statista.com, the number of social media users in Indonesia is gradually increasing every year. It is estimated that there will be around 125.38 million social network users in Indonesia this year, up from 88.23 million in 2016. So, it is clear that social media should be taken seriously.
But there is a lot of controversy surrounding social media that should make us think about how important it is to our lives. Let us describe the positive impacts first. Social media helps us minimize physical distances by connecting people that are far away from each other. Many social media apps also give us easier access to a lot of information such as news, for example. News is important because it provides us with updates about what is happening in the world around us, and this helps to expand our knowledge.
On the other hand, social media is also a popular outlet for cyberbullies, and this can lead to the victims self-harming or worse. It is also an open source of inappropriate pornographic content that affects a lot of young viewers, and because social media makes it easier for us to post anything sometimes people don’t really spend time thinking about what the effects of their posts might be. This could lead to that person making a lot of comments that can be interpreted as controversial or hateful.
In conclusion, I think social media, as well as all the other things, has a good side and a bad side, but the impact that it has on our lives depends on how we choose to use it.
