Are you familiar with the symbols of a thumb- up on facebook or other social media? If you click on the symbol it means you like the statement or photo uploaded by the account owner. Otherwise, you will click on the upside-down thumb.
The phenomenon above shows that basically humans are happy to seek recognition to be liked or loved. But the question is whether being liked equals to being respected? Can someone give respect to others without he himself having to like that person or his/her works?
Respect is a very important component not only of personal identity but also of interpersonal relationships. One of the basic human rights could be the feeling of being respected. The absence of respect in members of a community may result in social disintegration and even violence.
Why is there hostility? Why is there blasphemy? Or, why people hate each other? Even, why are there many people who don’t care about others who are unfortunate? Why are there many parents who shout at their children? Friends who do not want to say hello? The answer is because there is lack of respect in our community.
Nowadays, the word “Respect” is too easy to say today. In reality, it is very hard to put the word into practice. It is either because of prestige, ego, or pride. That is truly human nature. And, only few are able to control it.
So, what is respect?
The word respect is originated in the Latin word “respectus” that means attention, regard or consideration. According to Cambridge Learner’s Dictionary on https://dictionary.cambridge.org, respect means a) polite behaviour towards someone, especially because they are older or more important than you; 2) admiration for someone because of their knowledge, skill, or achievements.
It is a concept that refers to the ability to value and honor another person, both his and her words and actions, even if we do not approve or share everything he or she does. It is accepting the other person and not trying to change them. Respecting another person is not judging them by their attitudes, behaviors or thoughts. It is not expecting for someone to be otherwise.
Why and how should we respect others?
Not everyone can like or accept our personality. Neither can we. We cannot like everyone we know. For one thing or another, we may not like someone. Either because of his attitude, his habits, or his treatment towards us.
Even so, sometimes we still have to show respect for him/her. Even if we do not like his/her attitude, we need to maintain good relations with him/her. There are a number of reasons: e.g. because he is a person who still has blood ties with us or because he's our boss at the office. It is not easy to position ourselves to respect people we do not like. But there are always some ways to try.
Respect can create a good personality
Respect actually requires not only attitude but also a real action to implement this attitude directly. The first thing we can do is to try to be respectful of older people including our own parents, older people we meet. Giving respect to people who are older, more mature and more knowledgeable than us can get us in control of a good personality. We can be a self-controlling individual, don’t have to be rebellious, resistant, rude and disrespectful to others.
Helps you have lots of friends
Being respectful of people you know and do not know directly can make you have lots of friends. The social environment can provide an excellent response for yourself. Then you can also create the views of others who know you as a person who is full of respect. If you are respectful and loving others then you can get good judgment from others. This is what makes others like your personality.
Other people will also respect you
A warm and respectful attitude to others can make others give you excellent personal judgment. This attitude can make you get good treatment from others. You will gain respect not only from your own parents but also from other families and friends who know you. Then a respectful attitude can radiate from your face that can make you look more attractive and loveable.
You can feel happier
When you have respect for others then you can have a very good attitude of tolerance. This kind of good attitude will enable you accept the differences. Then it can make you have a good relationship with others. You can also get a sense of satisfaction, acceptance and delight with different attitudes in your community.
Apparently that's some of the benefits of respect for others. If you still feel less respect for others and the environment then try to improve your attitude and you can get all the benefits well mentioned above.
