What is the education in Indonesia like? As a student I will say that the system of education in Indonesia is mostly teacher-centered. That means, teachers explain the lesson and students listen to the explanation. Students absorb all the explanations and then when they do not understand, they can ask questions if there is enough time, but unfortunately, most students are reluctant to ask, or the time for a question and answer session is not available. After teachers explain the lesson usually they will give the students some exercises. In order to know how well the students understand the lesson, teachers will give tests. This system places teachers as the ruler.
This system of education seems to work quite well but in my opinion the system needs to be modified in accordance with modernization. In the era of the internet, students have easy access to so much information so teachers are not the only source of information available. Moreover, students can sometimes get more information about a topic than the teachers because of their better skills with technology. For me, teachers should place themselves as the students’ partners and together teachers and students should discuss more about the topics they study.
Moreover, in this day and age, students get bored more easily so teachers should create a fun atmosphere in which the process of teaching and learning is fun. For example, instead of teaching about how plants grow, it would be more fun to ask students to grow plants together and observe the growing steps of the plants.
Indonesia has many students and I think people in charge of education should start making the education system in Indonesia become better.
