Education in Indonesia had not been talked about for a while until the recent national exams. Students across Indonesia were shocked after witnessing the difficulty of the tests. It was noticeably harder than last year’s national exam. This resulted in a hail of complaints from students and the general public to the ministry of education. In response to the complaints, the minister of education stated that Indonesia’s education system is far behind a lot of developed countries and thus, in need of improvement.
This particular event has opened my eyes to the state of the educational system in Indonesia and I have to say that it’s not looking as good as what I thought it would be. Education is essential to the growth of a country and is, basically, one of the things that has helped build society into what it is right now.
It is quite concerning to know that a lot of students do not understand the benefits of having an education and find it to be an annoyance. However, this can not be blamed entirely on the students. It is a teacher’s job to teach his or her students the lessons according to the subject, but it is also a teacher’s job to make his or her students understand the benefits of what they are learning, in the hope that the students will see education in a better light than just simply listening and doing what their teacher has said. I am still hoping to see the day when students will want to learn more things simply because they want to learn, not because they were told to do so.
