SHB Primary was represented by three of our students at the EF National Spelling Bee on Sunday , November 27 in Kelapa Gading.
Levia Aurelia Merian Zhu and Tommy Nugraha Salim are our grade 3 students together with Zachary Yadzharu from grade 5. Having placed in the top three at the EF Tang City Spelling Bee , these students automatically qualified for this competition.
Students flew in from all over Indonesia , so our students were fortunate to not have to travel so far.
Levia and Tommy competed in Category A , students from grades 1 – 3. The first round in the competition was written and here is the list of 25 words they were asked to spell :
A few easy words , but mostly quite difficult !
Levia did well enough to progress from this round and continue to the semi-final.
Zachary competed in Category B for students grades 4 – 6. Keep in mind that Zachary is in grade 5 , so he was competing against older students as well as younger students.
Here is the list of 25 words Zachary had to spell :
No easy words in this list and quite a few not commonly used in teaching or learning English at the primary level !
Zachary , however , did well enough to continue through to the semi-final round also.
As expected , the semi-final contained a more difficult word list and both Zachary and Levia did not reach the final round. However , all three of our champion spellers represented SHB very well and gained valuable experience in competing in a national competition.
Obviously we are all very proud of their efforts and hope to see them competing at this level again next year. Maybe we will have a few more SHB students joining this competition next year. Fingers crossed !
