Following the eruption of Anak Krakatau on September 4, 2026, the air in Tangerang, South Tangerang, the Greater Jakarta area (Jabodetabek), and surrounding regions became polluted, mixed with volcanic dust carried by the wind across various parts of Indonesia. The air we breathed immediately felt different, causing a sensation of breathlessness. Such polluted air conditions certainly cannot be ignored, as they pose a danger to human life.
Unhealthy air quality poses a danger to anyone who breathes it, particularly the elderly and children. These groups are highly vulnerable and susceptible to acute respiratory infections (ARI). Under such conditions, the government must immediately implement protective measures for those at risk of respiratory infections. One necessary step for local governments is to mandate online learning from home for all schools, especially those located in Depok, South Tangerang, Tangerang City, the Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) area, and their surroundings.
Sekolah Harapan Bangsa is a private school located in the Tangerang City and South Tangerang areas. The spread of volcanic ash from Anak Krakatau is a cause for concern and poses a significant health risk to everyone, particularly the students of Sekolah Harapan Bangsa. The school's primary concern is the possibility of students inhaling the volcanic ash while on campus. Consequently, online learning (PJJ) has been mandated by the local government and the local education agency as a preventive measure to safeguard the health of the entire Sekolah Harapan Bangsa community.
Online learning activities (PJJ) at SD Harapan Bangsa Modernhill took place from Monday, September 7, 2026, to Wednesday, September 9, 2026. The decision by the Harapan Bangsa Education Foundation to implement home-based online learning (PJJ) was in accordance with instructions issued by the Education Offices of Tangerang City and South Tangerang City. Throughout this period, all online learning activities followed the regular schedule, concluding at 1:00 p.m.
Online learning activities were conducted for three consecutive days while monitoring the latest information regarding air quality—affected by the spread of volcanic ash—and assessing the safety of resuming in-person (onsite) classes. During this period of remote learning, teachers at Sekolah Harapan Bangsa prepared and delivered instructional materials via Google Classroom and Google Meet, providing guidance and instruction according to their respective class schedules.
Throughout the three days of online learning (PJJ), students at SD Harapan Bangsa Modernhill participated in their lessons with diligence and enthusiasm from their respective homes. Attendance was nearly 100% each day, with only one or two students absent due to illness. During discussion and Q&A sessions, the students listened attentively and responded well to the questions posed by their teachers. Consequently, all SD Harapan Bangsa Modernhill students were able to continue learning safely under teacher guidance, despite the remote online format. We appreciate the support and cooperation of the parents, whose assistance ensured the smooth conduct of these online learning activities over the three-day period.
