I moved to Indonesia when I was four years old. Learned a whole new language at that age wasn’t really a problem as I was not old enough to even know the meaning of being an outsider. I attended Sekolah Harapan Bangsa for most of my life. Never had to move or anything like that since I was comfortable where I was. I was involved in school activities such as the Student Council and other various events. High school was incredible.
I moved back to the United States right after the national exams ended back in Indonesia. I decided to attend community college before heading off to a university as I wanted to live closer to home. I am currently a Biochemistry Major with a minor in Mathematics and I love it. Being able to learn the things you love is the best thing ever. The best advice I could give to anyone is to study to understand and not for just good grades. I am pre-medicine and I am preparing myself for Medical School to follow my dreams of doing research as a surgeon. I was so lucky enough to be able to learn so much during my high school years that I can say with full confidence that the high school I went to, Sekolah Harapan Bangsa, taught me all the basic materials that prepared me for college here in the states. I am forever grateful to all my teachers back home who have supported me in every way possible that they would still check up on me from time to time to see how I was doing.
I attend school daily and study as much as I can. I also work at the Biological Science Center at Oklahoma City Community College as an anatomy and physiology tutor and lab assistant. During my free time, I volunteer at the Children’s Rehabilitation Hospital to help out with special education and patient care. From time to time, I would help out with blood donations with the American Red Cross as well.
People would ask me why I want to be a doctor. My answer is, I just do. I cannot imagine myself doing anything else with my life. I want to make a difference in this world and I know I can. There is so much darkness in the world that we live in today, that everything can be taken advantage of. The medical world is so money-hungry that abuse of power is not rare. I feel motivated to leave my mark and do some actual good. As of today, I am on track to do a Biomedical Research program funded by the government this coming summer which will give me more insight on the research world. I have maintained a 4.0 GPA, as my grades determine my success in getting into medical school. Being in the Honors Program has meant a lot to me. I have always dreamt of graduating summa cum laude. I know it’ll all be worth it in the end. I want to help people in the best way I know possible, which is through medicine. I want to help, and I will.
